How Gadgets Influence the World

The history of gadgets spans as far back as humanity itself -- since hominids began creating tools to make their lives easier. Humans have always created devices and appliances with specific practical purposes that were initially thought of as novelties, due to unfamiliarity with and initial unwillingness to accept the technology. Today, industry has augmented the creation of new gadgets, while certain retailers, including Brookstone and Richard Thalheimer's RichardSolo.com, specialize in popularizing them.

What famous inventors Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Leonardo da Vinci, among others, had in common was foresight. They understood that a lifetime spent playing with what others viewed as toys and senseless gadgets would eventually result in indispensable technology. From just that small group, the groundwork for electricity, communications, film, and flight was laid because of their gadgets, which obviously possessed more value than novelty.

Perhaps one of the earliest, most well known gadgets created is the wheel, many millennia ago. Take a ride in your car and witness how truly revolutionary such a gadget became and how much we now rely on it for transportation. A more recent gadget, the Apple iPhone, appears to be the beginning stages of yet another gadget-turned-necessity that will reshape communications.

"The iPhone may someday be looked upon as the device that started a second revolution in computing. Desktop computing was the first revolution. Hand-held computing will someday be regarded as the second revolution, and the iPhone is the product that started it."
-Richard Thalheimer, RichardSolo.com

All gadgets were not created equal. In fact most inventions are built on the newest technology. The world of gadgets is tiered; devices fall into one of four categories: mechanical, electronic, programmable, and application. Mechanical gadgets include the wheel, as well as later developments such as the pulley, the bicycle, the sail boat, the thermometer and the sort. Following the advent of electricity, gadgets were taken to a new level as inventors began to discover different uses for the newly harnessed energy. The television, radio and quartz watch are examples of electronic gadgets. After electricity, inventors toyed around with electronic information via microprocessor, beginning an age of programmable devices such as computers, and later, MP3 players and the iPhone. Application gadgets include iTunes, Microsoft Office and other computer applications that customize our experience with programmable devices.

Richard Thalheimer, the President and founder of online gadget vendor RichardSolo.com, and founder and former CEO of gadget giant The Sharper Image, understands, maybe better than anyone, that there's much more to gadgets than novelty.

"Certainly most people enjoy the novelty of a gadget that introduces new convenience to their lifestyle. What they forget is that solving these everyday problems is not just entertainment, but some of these devices become functional necessities. In my personal life, I rely on my iPhone, my garage door opener, my nose hair trimmer, my electric toothbrush, and other gadgets that were once regarded as novel gadgets. "
- Richard Thalheimer, RichardSolo.com

Both his former brainchild and his current venture sell quirky, useful and fun gadgets of all types, from mechanical to programmable and application. He has seen some devices, such as the Ionic Breeze air purifier, spur sensational and lasting trends based on a realization of utility value, while others collected dust on the shelves after their novelty wore out. Specialty stores like The Sharper Image and Richard Thalheimer's RichardSolo.com serve a greater purpose: spread new ideas, and give credit to the Franklins and Edisons of the world.

The Fastest Car

Unlike most of the things on this list, the fastest car in the world
can not only be driven, it can also be owned (provided, of course,
that you have $600,000). Although the Bugatti Veyron is often cited
as the fastest thing on four wheels, only the SSC Ultimate Aero
actually holds the official title of world's fastest production car.
Built by Shelby SuperCars (which is not affiliated with famed car
designer Carroll Shelby), this 1,183-horsepower, American-made
monster is capable of 256 mph. But, this thing doesn't just rule on
straightaways -- the Ultimate Aero also holds the world slalom
record (averaging 73.1 mph), which it snatched away from the Italy's
greatest supercar, the Ferrari Enzo.

Hottest Gadgets of the Year

Everybody is crazy about the latest high-tech gadgets and gizmos like super-slim MP4 players that can do nearly everything except shoot laser beams, advanced toy robots with artificial intelligence that are smarter than your math teacher and can transform into racing cars, micro RC helicopters that are small enough to manoeuver in a shoebox and USB turntables that are able to shrink your vast record collection down to the size of a micro chip.

But which gadgets and gizmos are really hot this year? What are the must-have gadgets of 2007, what's going to be big next year and where can you get all this awe-inspiring stuff for a reasonable price?

That's a lot of questions! For starters, here's a short list of the most exciting gadgets for winter 2007/2008.

The Top 10 most remarkable Gadgets and Gizmos include:

1. Walkie Talkie Watches are elegant high quality wristwatches with full clock function that are also real professional mobile radio communicators with voice activation. They're perfect for hiking, biking, mountaineering and other outdoor sports and - best of all - they let you communicate for free. Can your super-expensive iPhone do that?

2. A stylish hybrid between a chopper and an insect, the innovative Micro Mosquito RC Helicopter is the tiniest, lightest and most stable indoor flyer in the world and it's so incredibly easy to navigate that even your kids can fly it in a china shop with their eyes closed.

3. The handy Ion USB Turntable allows you to convert your vinyl records into MP3s while listening to them. All you have to do is plug it into the USB port of your computer, put a record on and press "Play". It also has a 3.5mm input jack so you can use the turntable as a converter for your tape deck or Mini Disc player.

4. The elegant Archos Gmini 402 Pocket Multimedia Center is a user-friendly 20GB multimedia player that lets you watch videos and photos, lets you listen to your favourite tunes and even lets you play games. You can plug it into your telly, computer or digital camera and it's also a powerful digital recording unit. A must-have for multi media enthusiasts!

5. Who woulda thunk this? The Stylophone is back in style! One of the most bizarre inventions of the 70s is the ingenious Stylophone Pocket Organ. David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Pulp and even Kraftwerk used Stylophones on their recordings. Thirty years after the first Stylophone-craze, the fantastic electronic musical instrument makes its comeback with new features like volume control, headphone jack and cool new sounds. You can even plug in your iPod or MP3 player to play along to your favourite songs.

6. The environmental friendly, muscle powered Can Crusher reduces your empty beer cans to a fifth of their size. Can you drink as fast as the crusher crushes? It also has an in-built bottle-opener in case you prefer bottles.

7. Digital Photo Frames let you display your digital pictures in a new way without the need for a computer. They come in an assortment of colours, styles and sizes and are simply perfect for your office desktop or bedside locker.

8. The amazing SpiderSapien Spider-Man Robot does whatever a spider can! Well, almost. It's as if the award-winning Robosapien was bitten by a radioactive spider: This awesome 2' tall biomorphic robot looks like Spidey, talks like Spidey, has "Spider-Sense" and even pretends to shoot spider-webbing from his wrist like Spider-Man!

9. Designed by gamers for gamers, the phenomenal Pyramat S2000 with innovative Audio Responsive Technology, personal surround sound and rumbling bass delivers the ultimate gaming experience! Plug in your game console, iPod, telly, VCR or DVD player and feel the action!
